Rome Health to host Community Health Night on bunion and hammertoe treatment

Bunions and hammertoes can make everyday activities, including walking and wearing shoes, uncomfortable. Rome Health will host a free Community Health Night at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, to help community members understand these common foot conditions and learn about treatment options.

Rome Health Podiatrist Ayanda Dube, DPM, MHA will discuss bunions and hammertoes, including nonsurgical treatments and surgical options. Dr. Dube specializes in treating complex foot and ankle conditions that have not improved with conservative care.

The presentation will take place in the Rome Health Classroom on the second floor. Advance registration is not required. The presentation will also be livestreamed on Facebook Live.

Bunions develop when the joint at the base of the big toe shifts out of alignment, causing a bump to form along the side of the foot. They may be associated with inherited foot structure, arthritis or pressure from footwear. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, redness and difficulty finding comfortable shoes.

Hammertoes occur when one or more smaller toes bend abnormally at a joint. They can develop because of muscle imbalances, foot structure or footwear that crowds the toes.
Symptoms may include toe pain, stiffness, corns, calluses and difficulty walking comfortably.

When bunions or hammertoes cause persistent pain, limit walking, interfere with daily activities or make it difficult to wear shoes, an evaluation by a podiatrist can help determine the most appropriate treatment.

Dr. Dube is accepting new patients at Rome Health Podiatry, located in the Medical Center on the hospital’s main campus. To schedule an appointment, please call 315.338.7040.
