Board-certified surgeon Pete Del Pino, MD, will offer free hernia screenings from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Oneida Surgical Group, 357 Genesee St., Suite 3, Oneida. Appointments are limited and may be scheduled by calling 315-338-7209.
During the free screening, Del Pino will evaluate symptoms, answer questions and determine whether additional testing or treatment is recommended.
Hernias are a common condition that occur when an organ or tissue pushes through a weakened area of muscle or connective tissue. While some hernias may initially cause mild discomfort, symptoms often worsen over time. Common signs and symptoms of a hernia may include:
• A visible bulge or lump in the abdomen or groin

• A feeling of pressure, heaviness or weakness in the abdomen
• Burning or aching at the site of the bulge
• Swelling or discomfort that increases throughout the day
• Nausea or difficulty with bowel movements in more serious cases
Medical professionals advise against delaying care for a suspected hernia. Hernias do not resolve on their own and may enlarge over time, potentially leading to increased discomfort and more complex treatment. In some cases, a hernia may become incarcerated or strangulated, cutting off blood supply to surrounding tissue and requiring emergency surgery. Early evaluation can help determine appropriate treatment options and may reduce the risk of complications.
